AUSTRALIAN HAYDN ACADEMY - SPRING INTENSIVE

In collaboration with the Central Coast Conservatorium of Music.

Join us from Wednesday 27 to Friday 29 September at the Central Coast Conservatorium of Music in Gosford

The Australian Haydn Ensemble is committed to creating engaging experiences for young, early career and professional musicians in both regional NSW and metropolitan areas. We love working with musicians who have (or think they might like to have) an interest in historical performance practice. We are passionate about providing opportunities to learn the specialist skills involved in Baroque and Classical period instrument performance.

The Australian Haydn Ensemble’s core musicians will join forces with students for the intensive, where we will be exploring the gems of the Baroque and Classical repertoire, elements of historically informed practice and period instrument practice.

STREAM 1: MAIN AHE ACADEMY ORCHESTRAL COURSE – HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL
In September 2023, the Australian Haydn Ensemble and the Central Coast Conservatorium of Music present an intensive youth orchestra experience. This is a three-day orchestral course for students exploring music of the Baroque and Classical eras

The main orchestral group will perform on modern instruments at A440 pitch. We plan to make sure that students will have the opportunity to try playing on gut strings and use baroque/classical bows as part of the experience.

Applications are open to students from both metropolitan and regional areas. The main AHE Academy Orchestral Course provides participants with an immersive and unique musical experience, strongly connected to eighteenth-century music and philosophies.

We recommend applicants be a minimum GRADE 6 AMEB or equivalent and above for this stream.

STREAM 2: ADVANCED AHE PERIOD INSTRUMENT ENSEMBLE – TERTIARY & EARLY PROFESSIONAL LEVEL
Advanced students at a tertiary or early-stage professional level who have some prior knowledge of period instruments, or have been studying period instrument performance, will form an ensemble on period instruments at 415 pitch led by Artistic Director Skye McIntosh and other AHE principal musicians. All participants will have the chance to play alongside and perform with the members of the Australian Haydn Ensemble throughout the course and at the culminating concert performance.

MASTERCLASSES - SOLO & CHAMBER MUSIC COACHING
The course will include a masterclass session where students can present a solo work or form chamber music ensembles or receive individual tuition on their solo material.

It is recommended that students present a piece from the Baroque or Classical era to take advantage of AHE’s specialist knowledge in historical performance practice. (e.g. Bach, Vivaldi, Corelli, Haydn, Mozart). As part of the advanced preparation material, students will be provided with listening lists with recommended recordings that give examples of historically informed interpretations.

Depending on the number of applicants, students may be able to form a chamber music ensemble with other participants to work on repertoire as a group.

If students prefer not to participate in this section, they are more than welcome to observe.

BAROQUE DANCE
Baroque bassoonist and dance specialist Simon Rickard will deliver 3 baroque dance workshops during the course. Students will learn about the different baroque dances that the music they play is based on, learn the steps and also have the chance to become a baroque band member, accompanying the group during the sessions.
